Djo Munga

Djo TUNDA WA MUNGA est né en 1972, à Kinshasa (ex Zaïre, actuel République Démocratique du Congo).

Il vit désormais en Belgique.
Il entame des études classiques complétées par un enseignement en Arts Plastiques, puis à l’INSAS (Bruxelles, Belgique) des études en réalisation. En 1998, son film de fin d’études Anguy n’a pas plu à la direction de l’école qui ne trouve pas cette vision de la vie « suffisamment africaine » et lui refuse son diplôme. Mais il parvient néanmoins à placer son court métrage dans différents festivals en Belgique et à l’étranger. Il a réalisé ensuite des documentaires. En 2002, il réoriente sa carrière et fonde sa structure de production à Kinshasa. Il réalise en 2007 le pilote d’une série autour du Sida : Papy (52 min).
En 2011, Djo Munga réalise son premier long métrage VIVA RIVA! qui remporte 6 African Movie Awards au Nigéria et le Prix MTV du Meilleur film africain 2011. Le film sera distribué dans 25 pays dont 18 en Afrique.

Djo Tunda Wa Munga was born in 1972, in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo). He went to the National Film School of Belgium, INSAS in his early twenties. After living in Europe, he returned to the DRC and established a film production company dedicated to training young filmmakers. He has directed several medium-length documentaries, including HORIZON EN TRANSITION (2005) and in 2010 he’s made the acclaimed documentary STATE OF MIND (Dok.Fest, Doc Point), and produced CONGO IN FOUR ACTS in 2009 (a series of films which are the first DRC-directed documentaries) which premiered at the Berlinale in 2010 and has screened at over 50 festivals to date.
He completed shooting his feature film debut VIVA RIVA! (2010) that premiered at the Toronto Int. Film Festival in 2010, and Berlinale in 2011. In 2011 the film won six African Movie Academy Awards and MTV’s first ?Best African Movie’ award.

Djo Tunda wa Munga föddes i DR Kongo och flyttade som 10-åring till Belgien, där han utbildade sig vid National Film School of Belgium och sedan återvände till DRC. Utöver sina egna filmer har han även startat Demokratiska Republiken Kongos första produktionsbolag Suka Productions. Viva Riva! väckte stor uppmärksamhet då den visades på Berlin International Film Festival 2011. Tidigare har Munga bland annat regisserat Congo in Four Acts. Han är en av de mest intressanta regissörerna från DRC idag.
