Michael Tsegaye, né en 1975, vit et travaille à Addis Abeba, en Ethiopie.
Diplômé de l’École des Beaux-Arts et du Design de l’Université d’Addis Abeba en 2002, il est par la suite obligé d’abandonner la peinture à cause d’une allergie développée à l’huile. Il découvre en meme temps sa passion pour la photographie dont il ne fera pas une simple profession mais une façon d’exprimer sa propre voix.
« En tant que photographe, j’essaie autant que possible d’éviter d’être classé.
Cela est particulièrement nécessaire lorsque on est Africain et plus spécifiquement Éthiopien. Je me place parmi mes pairs, photographes et peintres, du monde entier.
En tant qu’Éthiopien, je n’ai pas d’obligation à porter mon regard uniquement sur la douleur. Ma vie, et celle des autres artistes africains, n’est pas rythmée par la pauvreté et les privations, même si ce sont des vues courantes. Je cherche plutôt à comprendre ma vie et le 21ème siècle et exprimer tout cela à travers l’art. »

I place myself among my peers (photographers and painters) across the world. As an Ethiopian I do not have a duty to focus my lens on suffering alone. My life, and that of other African artists, is not predicated on poverty and hardships, although they are common sights. Rather I seek to understand my life and standpoint in the 21st century and express these through art. »
