Crowdfunding: Talibès – A Short Film by Alassane Sy, a meditative drama exploring cultural conflict

Sy realised the importance of making a film to shine a light on his culture and garner awareness of the ongoing struggle to maintain tradition. Last year he travelled to Senegal and whilst there shot his debut short film Marabout. He seeks to continue exploring the complex identity of Islam through protagonist Fallou in Talibès.

With the rise of fundamentalism globally acting like an iron curtain, the film is as relevant as ever. Often the depictions of Islamic fundamentalism are not from Africans themselves. Talibès will share a fresh new perspective and explore universal themes like immigration and dual cultural identities which ultimately speaks to us all.

Our artistic vision is to weave a rich tapestry of intimate sounds and words, bright cinematography and obscure portraiture into a cohesive energy that will penetrate the heart. Influenced by the works of African filmmakers Abderrahmane Sissako and Ousmane Sembene, our aim to use the medium of cinema as a time capsule of the city. A mellow meditation of urban alienation and personal and familial disconnection.

About the Film:
Talibès
is the story of Fallou who has been sent from Senegal to London by a marabout linked to Boko Haram. Fallou will discover London’s energy, music and people. He will make new friends, fall in love and eventually make a choice: stay faithful to his religion or embrace the exciting life of this new city.

Budget:
The money we raise will go towards our travel, food, location hire (we have over four locations booked) and equipment rental for our four day shoot. It will also help us with paying our contributors, such as specialised post production.
