On croit connaître André Malraux, ministre couvert d'honneurs, celui qui toute sa vie a sculpté une légende derrière laquelle il dissimulait son mystère. Qui est cet homme insaisissable, cet aventurier, ce sphinx génial et mythomane ? Le récit d'une vie, aussi tragique que romanesque, les témoignages de son épouse Madeleine Malraux et de ses proches aident à cerner cet esprit fiévreux qui prophétisait : "Le XXIe siècle sera religieux ou ne sera pas". Même apocryphe, impossible d'ignorer cette phrase écrite en un temps où l'humanisme paraissait triomphant et l'homme occidental maître du monde. Dès ses premiers ouvrages dans les années 20, Malraux diagnostique la "crise du sens" du monde occidental. "Depuis le siècle des Lumières, l'homme occidental a contesté puis rejeté le message religieux, la science a montré l'insondable complexité de la création et peu à peu le vertige du néant s'est installé". Cette biographie est à la fois centrée sur le récit de cette existence romanesque et tragique, et sur l'œuvre qu'elle cherche à éclairer par son biais. Quel rapport entre l'homme public et l'homme privé ? Quel décalage entre l'œuvre et le créateur ?

We think we know André Malraux, the much-honored government minister, who throughout his life carved out a legend behind which to conceal his mystery. Who was this elusive man, this adventurer, this brilliant, mythomaniacal sphinx? As tragic and romantic as his life was, the testimonies of his wife, Madeleine Malraux, and those closest to him help outline this feverish intellect who once prophesied: "The 21st century will be religious or will not be." Even if it is apocryphal, it is impossible to ignore this declaration written at a time when humanism seemed triumphant and Western man the master of the world. As early as his first books in the 20s, Malraux diagnosed "the crisis of meaning" of the Western World: "Since the Age of Enlightenment, Western man has challenged then rejected the religious message, science has shown the unfathomable complexity of creation and gradually we were gripped by the vertigo of nothingness."
