Ce film est consacré à la ville de Maputo au Mozambique, jeune
capitale africaine émergeante au rythme frénétique de la de-
mande financière globale. Des habitants de différents milieux so-
ciaux nous accueillent dans leur quartier et nous aident à voir par
leurs yeux le réel Maputo. Parmi eux il y a Nhez, une célébrité en
devenir du rap qui vit dans les taudis et attend sa chance sous le
feu des projecteurs, en vendant des habits dans le centre-ville
pour joindre les deux bouts. « Chacun pour soi », comme il dit
toujours.

Mozambique’s capital Maputo is divided along lines of language and color, infrastructure, architecture and gender. MAPUTO: THE ETHNOGRAPHY OF A DIVIDED CITY is a poetic and visually beautiful journey through the urban landscapes of the city. We are introduced to fascinating people who share their stories and their views on the social structures. From slums to skyscrapers we encounter everything from Portuguese entrepreneurs and Indian shop keepers to street vendors that rap in changanam. The resulting film is a subtle and beautiful portrait of a multifaceted community, based on research from the Chr. Michelsens Institute.
