A child’s birthday party opens the story – Konrad frolics around with the little ones, while the mothers look on in admiration. Does Christine realise that five-year-old Emma and the somewhat older Käthe are closer to the father than the mother herself? Just a few days later she will break out in tears and say, “The children don’t want me! They hate me!” The idyllic situation has been showing cracks for some time now. Konrad wants to work as a theatre director again and has the chance of directing his own adaptation of Friedrich Hebbel’s “Nibelungen”. As Christine giving up her career as an anaesthetist at a hospital is not up for debate, the married couple employ an au pair girl from Argentina. But Isabel is pregnant and isn’t able to fulfil her duty in the end. The discussions start off harmless – who is to take the pregnant woman to be examined at the clinic, for example? Konrad gives in and postpones his first rehearsal because of Isabel.
