Frankfurt am Main, the German financial capital: Svenja and Oliver have only been in the city a short time; he has a job in management at an investment bank, she is unsuccessfully applying for a position as a photo editor. She first meets Roland Cordes at a vernissage; when they meet a second time, she learns that Roland is her husband’s boss.
A high-powered executive, he is fascinated by this young woman over whom he is unable to gain any power. To pursue his aims he arranges for her husband to be offered a position in Jakarta. Oliver has no idea that his predecessor was brutally murdered in Indonesia and, believing it is an opportunity to take a big step up the career ladder, accepts the job. This paves the way for a passionate affair between Svenja and Roland, an affair that comes to a sobering and foreboding end as the banking crisis hits and people take to the streets.
