M’appelle Mohamed Ali (My name is Mohamed Ali) is a show by the Burkinabé actor, Etienne Minoungou, who happens to bear a strong physical resemblance to the legendary Mohamed Ali. Written for Etienne Minoungou by the Congolese writer Dieudonné Niangouna, the play recounts the life of the brilliant and provocative heavyweight champion, Mohamed Ali. It follows his story from his most important wins, to being banned and stripped of his title and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in early 1967 for refusing the Vietnam draft (“I ain’t got no quarrel with the Viet Cong – they never called me nigger”), to the ‘rumble in the jungle’ when he reclaimed his world title in 1974. The play reflects on the power of resistance, on having faith in oneself, on complementing one another, on possessing a community spirit, a fighting spirit and on pushing boundaries.
