My mother´s tears

Director Aljandro Cardenas Amelio

Germany 2008, 93 minutes

Alex returns to Buenos Aires to visit his dying father Carlos. When his mother Lizzie and old family friends join him, memories begin to surface from his childhood. Alex and his family fled from the military junta in Argentina in the early 80s. They finally settle in West Berlin, where they live in an industrial loft together with an eclectic group of people who soon become important figures in Alex’s life. While Alex experiences the growing pains of falling in love for the first time and troubles at school, his parents are trying to come to terms with the frustrations of living in exile. They are constantly worrying about money and have difficulty adapting to the way of life in Germany. However, Lizzie sees Germany as a chance to raise her child in freedom and she learns the language, embraces the new culture and quickly finds work. In contrast, Carlos is completely unable to cope, feeling misunderstood and unaccepted. His yearning for Buenos Aires keeps him sitting in front of his paintings for hours, listening to Tango music and losing himself in his memories. When Alex discovers he can move things with his thoughts, he quickly chooses to hide his gift. But as he watches his parent’s relationship slowly fall apart, he begins to re-consider his decision in a desperate attempt to save his parents’ love with the full power of his gift.
