‘I Define Me’ Photo Exhibition

English

I Define Me is a collaborative photography project by Amnesty International, Xavier Project and Pawa254.

I Define Me challenges the labels imposed on Somali refugees in Kenya. In a context of xenophobia, prejudice and assumptions, I Define Me creates a space for participants to share their experience and define how they identify themselves.

Photographer Armstrong Too, found innovative ways to capture the participants’ identities without revealing their faces. Many of the images show participants holding an object that represents their occupation, what they sell to make a living, an interest, something important to them – a football, clothes, sim sim, books.

On the 28th of February, you are invited to attend a public viewing and discussion at The Kariobangi Mirror from 3-8pm. The Kariobangi Mirror is based at Sauti Ya Mtaa Kariobangi Hub in Kariobangi North, Land Mark Plaza along Kamunde road branching off Outer Ring Road at Kariobangi North Catholic church and Shell Petrol station.

On the 7th of March the public are invited to the official offline closing, and online launch of the exhibition which will take place at the Pawa254 gardens from 2-6pm.

Viewers are invited to respond to the exhibition by reflecting on how they define themselves and how they feel about identities that are imposed on them.
