So glücklich war ich noch nie – Play Time – Be who you want to be

Germany 2008/09, 92 minutes

Success is a matter of confidence, particularly in times of crisis. Life would be unbearable if there weren’t beautiful things to brighten it up a little, including pretty faces. Frank Knöpfel constantly flirts with life with his beguiling bright blue eyes. He buys a complete stranger an expensive coat in a designer boutique just because he feels like it. He disguises himself as a businessman from Oslo, a Mafia boss, a stock exchange specialist and an estate agent, whatever it takes to bring in the cash.

Frank Knöpfel is the type of person who enjoys looking in the mirror, and delights in what he sees there. At the start of the film he seems like a cool guy, with a cashmere sweater draped over his shoulders and flashing the cash in a designer boutique. Of course, no one knows that he’s using a stolen credit card. Frank couldn’t be friendlier. He even wants to splash out on a coat for an attractive customer in the boutique. He lavishes her with compliments as though he were a sales assistant: "You don't need this coat, this coat needs you!" She seems to be the first person to notice that Frank's friendliness has something compulsive about it. She declines his offer. In the meantime, the cashier has also realised that the credit card isn’t legit. Bad luck for Frank.

The ensuing prison sentence doesn’t cure him. No sooner has he returned to grim reality, working for a pittance in a court-appointed job as a condition of his parole, than he encounters the seemingly well-to-do blonde in, of all places, a brothel. To buy her freedom, he returns to his tried-and-true methods; he disguises himself as a sun-tanned estate agent, an investment advisor dealing in shares worth millions who lures in his victims with profits from illegal insider trading, and a businessman on the move between London, Oslo and Moscow. Thanks to his keen understanding of human nature, Frank, as ever, quickly gets what he set out for. This time, however, the woman at his side susses him out quicker than he expected.

Director Alexander Adolph bases the profile of his fictitious fraud on four genuine con artists that were featured in his documentary film "Die Hochstapler" ("The Con Artist"). The filmmaker raises the pressing question of what perception and worldview such a character might have through artfully staged scenes and imagery.
