English

As the second edition of Women’s Arts Festival draws closer, the organisers have announced venues that will be used during the festival.

The festival that will run from November 6 to 8 will be held at the Book Café, Coppa Cabanna rank and Old Georgians Sports Club respectively.

Festival Programmes Officer Courage Chinokwetu said they have a number of activities lined up to entertain and educate people.

“The audience should expect to be educated, entertained and intrigued. Activities to look out for during the festival include workshops which will offer perspectives and insights on issues affecting women and girls.

“The aim of these workshops is to encourage women and girls to know their rights and take charge of their circumstances,” he said.

The festival will also incorporate diverse arts genres such as music, dance, drama, poetry and visual arts and the aim of these events is to promote social change using expressive arts.

“Some of the main highlights include the Alliance for a Safer Future, an event which will be held at Coppa Cabanna taxi rank to explore women’s relationship with the public space.

“The event is driven by the notion that public spaces should be safe spaces but for women they are unsafe, as people verbally and sexually harass women,” said Chinokwetu.

The main highlight is the Concert of my Dreams which will mark the end of the festival at Old Georgians Sports Club.

“The Concert of my Dreams is a multi-racial and multi-ethnic arts musical concert which addresses the different stereotypes and discrimination that affect young women, at the same time celebrating the joys of womanhood.”

Other key highlights of the festival include paint-ball and various exhibitions whereby women will celebrate their creativity and accomplishments through showcasing and marketing their products

The festival is designed to identify, promote and empower female artists through trainings and networking platforms to use their art for social action, show solidarity and address the challenges facing women and girls in the broader society.

The festival is supported by the Culture Fund, Pamberi Trust and Environment Africa.
