It’s that time of the year again when the Playhouse Company proudly invites the people of KwaZulu-Natal to join us in celebrating the annual South African Women’s Arts Festival. This year’s festival marks our 18th anniversary and promises to be a truly unforgettable experience, boasting a mouthwatering line-up of features, live productions and special attractions that cater for all members of the family and cover all genres of the arts.
This year, the theme of the festival is WOMEN, and unashamedly so. The team at Playhouse has gone the extra mile to hand pick items that enhance this theme so that theatre enthusiasts are able to celebrate more meaningfully the role women play in our society and give deserved recognition and credit to their invaluable contribution to our nascent democracy.
South Africa is indeed blessed with an abundance of performing talent and skills which you will see coming to life in this feast of drama, dance, dialogue, poetry, music and entertainment on offer. There is something for everybody over this 8-day extravaganza and we are sure you’ll be spoilt for choice when settling down to make your final selection from the programme.
Being the year in which South Africans celebrate the 20th anniversary of our democracy, special attention has been paid to encouraging greater audience participation and interaction this time. You will notice that apart from the more conventional performing arts forms on the programme, we have endeavoured to broaden the appeal to include a SAWAF Dialogue in which a distinguished panel of speakers will lead a discussion on the important issue of social cohesion and members of the audience will be invited to participate. We are also proud to have on board with us Isolezwe and the Independent Group of Newspapers who have arranged a special lunch and seminar and there are other items covering books, poetry, open days for various government departments, an arts and crafts exhibitions and music to suit off tastes.

The Playhouse’s Arts & Craft exhibition has grown considerably well, presented in partnership with the African Art Centre. The theme will be within the country’s Celebration of 20 years of Democracy.

An immersive installation by artist Nolan Dennis will involve over 50 000 handwritten words on a constructed labyrinth of solid and canvas walls mapping South African history and tracing parallel histories of the journeys of women in the expression of struggle and freedom in South Africa.

Loft Theatre
It’s a unique play about three women – a black, an Indian and a coloured – all of whom either live or work in Durban North. The production explores their connections and the challenges of their complex lives through a combination of funny and poignant monologues and conversations.

Presented in partnership with the Departments of Arts & Culture, Health and Agriculture (KZN). Following last year’s success, the Department of Health’s mobile clinic will offer free services to our patrons and the Department of Arts & Culture will display arts & craft exhibitions. Attendees can also expect displays of organic vegetables and agro-processed foods by the Department of Agriculture.

Independent Newspapers (Ply) Ltd, in association with The Playhouse Company, presents its annual lntandokazi Women’s Club seminar pertaining to financial and business issues. Prominent speakers: Dr Habile, Ms Zanele Mbokazi and Pastor Sthembiso Zondo. MC: Slindile Nondangala

This year’s Children’s Theatre Day on 23 August will feature a Drumming and Dance Workshop with added fun in the form of live entertainment acts delivered by a variety of entertaining artists such as clowns, jugglers and magicians.

Precious Mvulane, founder and managing director of GAD Consulting Services Inc, is launching her first financial book, The Essential Finance Handbook. Targeting local business owners, the book is aimed at assisting readers know and understand their business finances and provides step-by-step tools that can be implemented to address organisational inefficiencies.

Choreographed by Mark Hawkins, this production honours, celebrates and pays tribute to 20 years of freedom in South Africa. Featuring: Nkanyiso Kunene, Parvishen Paideya, Thobeka (TK) Quvane, Leagan Peffer, Rachel Abrahams, Sandile Mkhize, Kirsty Ndawo, Simone Mann, Julia Hosmer, Monde Marafane and Gabriel Masango.

* Intergenerational Dialogue *

A platform for women, young and old, to converse around issues pertinent to womenfolk. The panel consists of distinguished speakers and role models with both a national and international footprint. It features TV and radio personality Ms Shado Twala as facilitator, and Ms Jude Kelly as keynote speaker – she boasts a long service in theatre and is currently the Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre in London. The panel also features Thato Tsautse, a lawyer and businesswoman, as well as the vivacious Krijay Govender.

Opera Theatre
The Playhouse Company has scored a major coup by drawing some of the country’s top musical talent for the Gala Concert. Topping the bill is Afro-Pop group Mafikizolo, who won big at this year’s MTV Africa Music Awards. To add to the star-studded line-up is: The Soil, well-known for their stirring a capella sound; afro-jazz singer Naima Kay, regarded as one of South Africa’s most promising artists in the contemporary music scene; and DJ Happy Girl on the decks. It’s a not-to-be-missed musical happening that will be directed by Somizi Mhlongo.

The Playhouse Company presents Sharman Macdonald’s Shades, by arrangement with Dalro Theatricals (Pty) Ltd. Shades takes us through an evening in the lives of Pearl (Lisa Bobbert), her mother (Jane Ross), her suitor (Louis van Eeden) and her young son Alan (Aleks Robertson) – an evening that changes the course of their relationships forever.
Directed by: Ralph Lawson.
