Naghol Land Diving

English

The Naghol or N’gol is a traditional Kastom ceremony performed by men on Pentecost island that grew out of the legend of Tamalie and his wife.  In the story, the wife escapes her abusive husband by climbing a tree and then hurling herself off it when the husband follows and tries to grab her.  He dives after her, falling to his death, not realizing that she had tied liana vines to her legs.  Now, only circumcised men dive during this ceremony as part of the annual yam harvest, wearing just a penis sheath and vines around their ankles, risking injury and even death.  Women and children chant and dance beneath the 20-30m tower built from jungle wood.  This is an extraordinary event, full of superstition and Kastom belief, not to be missed!
