"Le groupe gantois réuni autour de la chanteuse Paola Marquez et du saxophoniste/chef d'orchestre Jan Verstaen, est bien plus traditionnel, alliant rythmes afro-colombiens, swing dansant et une voix chaleureuse pour faire revivre la cumbia de l'époque d'or, les années 1960. C'est avec ce big band de douze musiciens, axé autour d'une section de cuivre et de percussions, que la chanteuse de jazz redécouvre ses racines. La force de cet album réside dans sa diversité alternant dans ses différents morceaux l'influence du chant traditionnel (Noche Ausente), des accents indigènes (El Fremdeling) ou encore celle des big bands américains (Optimismo Infernal). Les points forts sont Cumbia de Insomnia, ultra-dansant, plein de swing et de cuivres entraînants, et Jungle Fever, une reprise du groupe belge Chakachas. Bien qu'il ait été enregistré en Belgique, rien ne nous fait soupçonner que cet album est fait de notre côté de l'océan."

With cumbia big band Maguaré, jazz singer Paola Marquez is rediscovering her Colombian roots in the electrifying dance rhythms of the cumbia. Throughout the years, this genre has influenced Latin-American music, and is now conquering the rest of the world (check the recent releases on Soundway Records, World Circuit,...). Cumbia is derived from the Guinean word cumbe, which stands for celebration. No wonder a concert by Maguaré guarantees a huge latin party. Maguaré was founded at the Conservatory of Ghent in the beginning of 2009 as a latin big band, focussing on percussion, a strapping brass section, and a repertoire of cumbia and other Afro-Colombiaanse rhythms. Maguaré interprets the genre in a very unique way, with respect for the tradition they add elements from big band jazz, avant garde and even hiphop. Their first CD Cumbia Insomnia will present these different influences in one masterpiece, in the shops in the Benelux on the 13th of May 2013. Other European countries soon to follow.
