Un soir de juillet

Un soir de juillet emanates the same beautiful sensuality developed by Raja Amari in Avril and Satin Rouge. Her attention to body language and gesture shows a profound respect for her characters and provides the basis for building a veritable language. The camera first frames hand movements, hesitations, attentive silences, retreats, before moving in to a close up of the handsome face of the old woman in charge preparing the young bride for the wedding ceremony. After several gentle hints, a kind of complicity is created between the two women. Thus, the impossible becomes plausible and, when the young bride flees, the old woman hides her in her own bed. The point of rupture occurs when the camera moves away from the bridal procession to follow the old woman. It is at this moment that transgression becomes possible and the old woman, despite her ideas on destiny, starts singing in her rusty voice, with noticeable joy. Raja Amari’s interest in the theme of transgression has already been the subject and point of interest in Satin Rouge. In Un soir de juillet it is the subversive power of transgression that most speaks.
