Love always makes us suffer, as a billboard reminds us at the end of the film. There isn’t necessarily an answer to the xy chromosome equation! Max promises to go on holiday with his white wife Hélène and their children, but is too busy at work. His macho reactions make matters worse, and his wife walks out on him. A feeling of loss sets in. He seeks advice from a friend, from a clairvoyant, resists, and searches. Even his lover Keba can’t help him, which makes him dig his heals in and block the way out even more. In the end, Max lays siege to the house in which Hélène has taken refuge
« Stop being afraid », flashes a light in the street. Destabilised, Max gradually surpasses his fears and starts to recognise his failings. His wife forces him to undertake the journey he had refused that of a questioning of his virility, an identity quest, a quest for memory, therefore, which will give him back the will to live.
This intimate tale of family crisis centred on the character Max (played by Zeka Laplaine himself) is a sensitively shot, touching introspection that explores male-female relationships in a new way. It is new because this cinema does not shy from incertitude and improvisation to confer a greater degree of interiority and sincerity. It does not shy away from the risk of self-questioning either, and, flouting grand discourses, ultimately tells us that this is the way that the whole of society can be made to advance. The shots of the town thereby take on their full meaning, inscribing this singular story in the life of the city.
