Five young twenty-year-olds form a highly cohesive group until one of them accidentally dies in an argument. The trouble with this film is that it combines two registers which compete severely, rather than complementing one another as they are meant to. First and foremost, it constitutes a respectful portrait of young people, their relations, and the drama which progressively drives them apart. It successfully depicts the spiral that causes them not to admit to the accident, and the struggles that this generates between and within them. But this portrait, which is seen through the eyes of Pierrot and Madonna, two symbolic lost souls whom the youths get together and marry, is clothed in a terrible weightiness. The effort to find symbolic decors doesn’t help matters, and nor do the ad-like motorbike scenes. All in all, it is an unsuccessful, frustrating and annoying film.
