Yvonne Vera, née le 19 septembre 1964 à Bulawayo en Rhodésie du Sud (actuel Zimbabwe) et décédée le 7 avril 2005, est une écrivaine Zimbabwéenne.

Elle a d’abord travaillé dans des champs de coton dès l’âge de huit ans, près de la ville de Chegutu. Elle étudie ensuite la littérature anglaise et voyage au Canada, où elle se marie en 1987.

Revenue au Zimbabwe en 1995, elle devient en 1997 directrice de la Galerie nationale du Zimbabwe à Bulawayo (National Gallery of Zimbabwe). Elle retourne en 2004 au Canada, où elle meurt le 7 avril 2005 du SIDA.

Yvonne Vera fait partie d’un groupe d’auteurs africains, comprenant Wilson Katiyo, Chenjerai Hove et Charles Mungoshi, qui utilise la tradition orale des campagnes shona pour véhiculer un message de résistance à la domination blanche sur l’ancienne Rhodésie.

Passionnée et lyrique, l’œuvre d’Yvonne Vera aborde les thèmes du viol, de l’inceste et de l’infanticide, mettant l’accent sur l’inégalité entre hommes et femmes dans son pays, avant comme après l’indépendance.

Yvonne Vera (September 19, 1964 – April 7, 2005) was an award-winning author from Zimbabwe. Her novels are known for their poetic prose, difficult subject-matter, and their strong women characters, and are firmly rooted in Zimbabwe’s difficult past. For these reasons, she has been widely studied and appreciated by those studying postcolonial African literature.

Author of Why Don’t you Carve other Animals, Nehanda, Without a Name, Under the Tongue, Butterfly Burning, The Stone Virgins.
Her books have won her many prizes and have been translated into many languages bringing honour to her country, Zimbabwe.

Former Director of the National Gallery in Bulawayo.

It is with great sorrow that Yvonne Vera’s family and friends would like to inform you of her death. Yvonne died peacefully of meningitis in hospital in Toronto, Canada in the presence of her mother, Ericah Gwetai, and her husband John José.

She is survived by her parents Ericah and Lambert Gwetai, brother Tafadzwa and husband, John José

Yvonne Vera had been living in Canada for the last year working on her fifth novel.
She had so much to give, and had already given so much, she will be remembered for a very long time.

She will be greatly missed by many all over the world.

Nacida en Rodesia del Sur, trabajó en los campos de algodón desde los ocho años cerca de la ciudad de Chegutu.1 Más tarde estudió literatura inglesa y viajó a Canadá donde se casó en 1987.

De vuelta en Zimbaue, fue nombrada en 1997 directora de la Galería nacional de Zimbabue en Bulawayo y regresó a Canadá en 2004 donde murió al año siguiente de SIDA.

Yvonne Vera utilizaba la tradición oral shona para vehiculizar un mensaje de resistencia ante la dominación blanca como autores como Wilson Katiyo, Chenjerai Hove o Charles Mungoshi.

En su obra aborda temas como la violación, el incesto o el infanticidio resaltando la igualidad entre sexos tanto antes como después de la independencia de su país.
