Binyavanga Wainaina

Binyavanga Wainaina est un écrivain et journaliste né en 1971 à Nakuru au Kenya. Après des études de commerce à l’Université de Transkei en Afrique du Sud, Wainaina travaille plusieurs années à Cape Town.
Il est le fondateur et rédacteur en chef du journal kenyan Kwani Trust «  premier magazine littéraire en Afrique orientale », ainsi que directeur du Chinua Achebe Center for African Literature and Languages at Bard College (Etats-Unis).
Wainaina a notamment écrit pour The EastAfrican, National Geographic, The Sunday Times (South Africa), Granta 92, New York Times, Chimurenga magazine et The Guardian.
Son article « How to write about Africa », publié en 2005 dans la revue Granta 92 : The View from Africa a été particulièrement médiatisé.
En 2003, Binyavanga Wainaina a été primé par l’Association des Éditeurs Kenyans, en reconnaissance de ses services à la littérature kenyane. Le World Economic Forum l’a nommé « Young Global Leader » en 2007.
Il a notamment publié plusieurs textes (des articles, nouvelles, essais et une biographie) : Discovering Home (nouvelle, G21Net, 2001) ; An Affair to Dismember (nouvelle) ; Beyond the River Yei : Life in the Land Where Sleeping is a Disease (Essai, Kwani Trust) ; « How To Write About Africa » (Article, satire, Granta 92 2005) ; In Gikuyu, for Gikuyu, of Gikuyu (Article, satire, Granta 103 2008) ; One Day I Will Write About This Place: A Memoir (Biography, Graywolf Press, 2011).

Binyavanga Wainaina is the founding editor of the literary magazine Kwani? and won the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2002. His writing has also appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, and National Geographic. He is the director of the Chinua Achebe Center for African Writers and Artists at Bard College. He divides his time between Nairobi, Kenya and upstate New York.
