Baba Sissoko

Il est le descendant d’une grande dynastie de « Griots », représentations errantes qui détiennent et transmettent le savoir, la tradition, l’histoire et la culture locale.
Il débute sa carrière en jouant le Tamani (tambour parlant), accompagnant son grand-père lors de ses voyages de Griot. Ensuite, il entre dans l’Assemblée Instrumentale de Mali comme joueur de Ngoni et Tamani. Avec cette Assemblée, il part en tournée en Europe et aux États-Unis. Au tour européen participent aussi Kanja Kuiate et Ami Koita. Avec cette dernière, il enregistre quatre disques.

En 1991, il fonde le groupe Taman Kan avec lequel il réalise une tournée africaine. En 1993, il crée avec Habib Koité le groupe Bamada et gagne alors le concours « Découverte 1993 » promu par Radio France Internationale. Avec de groupe, il enregistre deux disques et part en tournée à travers le monde.

Dès 1995, il est régulièrement invité à donner des cours de Djembe, Balafon, Tamani, Ngoni et autres instruments traditionnels du Mali. Il enregistre aussi son premier CD avec les Taman Kan, alternant ainsi sa carrière de soliste à l’activité de percussionniste.
Sa polyvalence face à une vaste gamme d’instruments et l’extrême sensibilité envers d’autres formes d’expressions musicales, pas toujours liées au monde africain, le mènent à collaborer avec de vraies célébrités comme Buena vista social club, Sting, Santana, The Wailers, Youssou N’Dour, Salif Keita et d’autres encore.

Depuis 1999, il se trouve en Italie où il enregistre son deuxième CD « Djana ». En Italie toujours, il participe à différentes émissions de « Radio RaiI »‘ et, en tant qu’enseignant, il préside des séminaires à l’université de Calabre et à l’Institut V. Bellini de Catagne.
Au mois d’août de la même année, son nom est à l’affiche du prestigieux Festival de Taormina qui pour la première fois, avec Baba Sissoko, propose un concert de musique ethnique.
Son style musical est particulier aux mélodies et rythmes propres à sa tradition comme le Bambara, Peul, Mandinka et Sonhraï, il intègre les sonorités occidentales telles que le jazz, le rock et le blues.

Il est important aussi de ne pas négliger l’influence que l’Amandrai exerce dans ses compositions. L’Amandrai est une structure musicale répétitive et hypnotique propre au Mali. Selon certains historiens et chercheurs, transportée au-delà de l’océan par les tragiques déportations d’esclaves, celle-ci a donné naissance au blues avec lequel en effet, elle a plus d’une assonance en commun, offrant un merveilleux produit musical au goût à la fois exotique et occidental.

Actuellement, Baba Sissoko s’occupe de la promotion de son dernier disque « Djekafo », de celle du dernier disque de Dee Dee Bridgewater « Red Heart a Malian Journey », de celle du CD « Mali Mali » avec la fanfare de Moncourt, ainsi que de celle de Chris Joris et Bob Stuwart -Guest Baba Sissoko. Outre qu’il enregistre le dernier CD d’Omar Sosa, il a commencé la promotion du Baba Sissoko Ensemble, « Bamako Jazz ».
En décembre 2007, le gouvernement malien attribue à Baba Sissoko le prix de Tamani d’or (récompense pour la musique).

Biographie de Baba Sissoko


Born in Bamako (Mali), Baba Sissoko is the undisputed master of tamani (the original talking drum), that he started to play since he was a child (thanks to the teaching of his grand-father Djeli Baba Sissoko) and from which he is able to extract all the notes simply with a one, natural movement.
Baba Sissoko plays also ngoni, kamalengoni, guitar, balaphon, calebasse, sildrum and? he sings!
He is from a great and ancient dynasty of griots from Mali: in the Malian tradition, griots are deputed to calm down hearts and souls, by means of music. Baba Sissoko has been the first one to introduce the sound of tamani in the modern music of Mali.
In the Baba compositions there is a great influence of Amadran, that is a repetitive and hypnotic musical structure typical from Mali by which, according to many researchers, blues was born.
His style is peculiar: Baba loves to integrate melodies and rhythms of the Malian tradition (Bambara, Peul, Mandig e Sonrai) with the typical sounds of jazz and blues, creating fantastic musical effects.
This also thanks to the numerous experiences with other musicians belonging to cultures and roots completely different from his background.
His ability to play a wide range of musical instruments and his extreme sensitivity to other musical genders and expressions, brought him to cooperate with many fine musicians. Among others, he worked and cooperated with:
Habib Koite, Rokia Traore, Ibrahim Ferrer, Buena Vista Social Club, Don Moye and Art Ensemble of Chicago, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Miguel Anga Diaz, Omar Sosa, Chris Joris, Bob Stuwart, Aka Moon.
In the 2007 he come out with its 8th new album ?Bamako Jazz?.
In the 2007 he is also working with Omar Sosa in his project Afreecanos Quintet, together with Marque Gilmore (drums) Childo Tomas (electric bass), Mola Sylla (vocals).
In the 2009 he come out with its 9th album « Culture Griot » with a belgian jazz trio « Aka Moon » and his percussions band « Black Machine ».
In the 2010 he come out with its 10th new album ?The Eyes Over the World? together with the Italian folk band ?Il Pozzo di San Patrizio?.
At present, Baba is in tour with Eyes Over the World project, The Malian Tamani Revolution, Aka Moon and Black Machine, being busy also promoting his albums ?Culture Griot?, ?Djekafo? and ?The Eyes Over the World?.
He is also working with ?Afrocubism? the World Circuit new project, together with Cuban and Malian Stars like Bassekou Kouyate, Toumani Diabate, Eliade Ochoa, Kasse Mady Diabate, Djelimady Tounghara and many others.
